A Tradition of Elegance

Maldivian traditional dress reflects centuries of Indian Ocean trade, Islamic modesty, and local craftsmanship. Garments are designed for the tropical climate — lightweight, breathable fabrics adorned with exquisite hand-embroidery that can take weeks to complete.

Libaas — Women's Traditional Dress

The libaas is the quintessential Maldivian women's garment — a long tunic dress featuring a high collar and elaborate gold and silver thread embroidery (kasabu viyun). Worn at weddings, Eid celebrations, and formal occasions, each libaas is a work of art unique to its wearer.

Mundu — Men's Traditional Garment

Maldivian men traditionally wear the mundu, a sarong-like garment wrapped around the waist, paired with a plain or embroidered shirt. For formal occasions, a finely woven mundu with decorative borders is worn with pride.

Feyli & Other Garments

The feyli is a wrap-around skirt worn by women for everyday activities. Other traditional items include the thatched head coverings and woven accessories that complete ceremonial outfits.

Kasabu Viyun Technique

Artisans use fine gold and silver threads to create geometric and floral patterns on the collar, cuffs, and hem of the libaas. Each design is drawn freehand before stitching begins.

Traditional Weaving

Before embroidery begins, the base fabric is woven on handlooms using cotton threads. The quality of weaving determines the drape and durability of the finished garment.
